Including smallholders

Why is smallholders engagement lacking in ARD? For this central puzzle from the GCARD2 foresight paper "The voice of smallholders in shaping priorities", three possible explanations have been pointed out by researchers from the ETC Foundation:

  1. Lack of capacity
  2. Lack of democracy
  3. Lack of accountability
All three views may overlap as well. New ways to interact with farmers are needed and this has to be a two-way process, the researchers conclude. Read more and find out about the INSARD (INcluding Smallholders in Agricultural Research for Development) consortium here.

Another session led to discussions on whether some problems regarding smallholder inclusion might be overlooked. While the primary focus is on the production level, there are other crucial obstacles for smallholders to be addressed on a global scale such as land access, land-grabbing and price volatily. Read more here.
