1st Week: Welcome and beginning of the E-consultation:Introducing yourself ,sharing your experiences
Welcome message sent by Dr. Mohammad Majdalawi, E-Consultation Coordinator : Welcome to the e-consultation for the West Asia and North Africa region (WANA), a 21/2-week electronic dialogues in possible pathways to transform agricultural knowledge into development impact. In this message, I invite you to introduce yourself and to share and analyze your experience that shows how an agricultural innovation in your region had a development impact. At the end of this message, you will find several helpful reminders about this on-line event. Having a virtual conversation can be challenging. You may perceive electronic communication environments as impersonal, and you may feel uncomfortable "sending a message to a list". That is why you are invited personally, during this first week, to inform and share an experience on the impact of an agricultural innovation in your region. Responding to the points mention in your message; please note the following: Name: Ebrahim Abdulqader Name of Organization: Bahrain Center for Studies and Research Professional Background: Fisheries sciences (e.g. stock assessment & management, statistics, biology, socioeconomic) Currently Involved: socioeconomic study The Innovation: The sustainable management of a migratory species requires that all concerned countries should cooperate and applied regional management. This management requires online fisheries status reports which depends on the data to be collected by a continuous monitoring program. Internet can provide the base for an electronic program which will utilize data and will provide online management reports. GCC countries had started this system (see www.gccfisheries.org) but unfortunately due to several reasons data provided was very small to test the importance of the program. Ebrahim

My expertise include commodity research, relationship management and monitoring & evaluation. Current role is Manager Product Development (Research). Working in the middle east necessitates to highlight the innovation of drip/sprinkle irrigation. Innovation in genetics, products, practices, processes, and institutions have allowed the sector to increase both the quantity and quality of products available to consumers, while freeing up labour, land and other resources for use elsewhere in the economy. The capacity to innovate goes well beyond the discovery of new knowledge and the ability of entrepreneurs to take an idea to market. • Analyze its impact in terms of what worked and what didn't and why, including aspects like partnerships involved, barriers and bottlenecks. marketing lefacutting bee hives for using it as a crop pollinator especially in the newly reclaimed areas in Egypt. This is was my idea of my previous study; how I can give framers a hive for increasing seed production of alfalfa. Message sent by Dr. Ahmed Abu Shaban, professor in agricultural economics at the faculty of agriculture, Al Azhar University. Dear Colleagues I am glad to participate in the e-consultation. I am Ahmed Abu Shaban, currently, working as assistant professor in agricultural economics at the faculty of agriculture, Al Azhar University. My research interest is related to natural resources management and its impact on the livelihood of the rural families. I conducted study to investigate the impact of the availability and use of water resources on the living standard of rural families. Additional concern of the study is to investigate the socioeconomic feasibility of using treated wastewater in irrigated agriculture. The study followed the holistic approach where the institutional settings, treatment process, living standard of rural families and the potentialities of product marketing were investigated. I am also interested in the rural poverty. I conducted study on rural poverty assessment and outreach of social programs that target rural poor families. E-consultation:Transforming agricultural knowledge into development impact:West Asia &North Africa
Dear Participants of the West Asia and North Africa E-consultation, In less than a week we will begin our e-consultation, an online discussion which will go from September 2 to September 24, 2009. The main theme will be possible pathways to transform agricultural knowledge into development impact. The consultation results will feed into the Global Conferences on Agricultural Research for Development (GCARD) and capture the contributions and perspectives of all stakeholders in the agricultural research, education and development systems. The overall objective is to reshape the global agricultural research for development agenda and centre it on the needs of the poor in developing countries. A warm welcome to all of you! In this message I will give you some details on the agenda of the e-consultation, the languages, and the tools that we will use to communicate. First of all, here is a short outline of the agenda for this online event: • Pre-event activity – Starting now we invite you to browse through some information resources, like the issues raised by the regional review that has been developed for this consultation, or the summary of the results of a questionnaire led by the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR) related to future opportunities for research and innovations to reduce poverty and hunger, improve human health and nutrition, and enhance ecosystem resilience.
