Sir Gordon Conway (Chief Scientist, Department for International Development, UK Government) gave a keynote presentation on the conference theme. He said green revolution technology focused initially on reducing lodging in cereals, was successful but it was limited to ‘ideal environments’, relied heavily on synthetic fertilizers and pesticides, and as a result by-passed Africa. He called for new public-private-community partnerships for agricultural growth and development.
