Barriga, Claudio
Dr. Claudio Barriga has a degree in Agronomy from the Catholic University of Chile, and a MS. and Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin in the fields of Agricultural Economics and Business Management.
Dr. Barriga is recognized as the promoter of Agribusiness in Latin America, and has an important experience as Professor of Agribusiness in Chilean Universities and abroad. He created the first Latin American program in Agribusiness Management at the Instituto Tecnológico de Monterrey, Mexico in 1974.
As an international consultant he has worked with the World Bank, IDB, AID, Ford Foundation, private companies and other organizations. He has a broad experience in the international seed industry, and was a member of the ISF Board of Directors as well as the Intellectual Property and Breeder`s Committee of the organization. He was also a Vice-President of the Chilean Seed Industry Association.
In Chile he is a fruit producer, and has a dehydrating plant for raisin production. He has been for several years a member of the council of the Sociedad Nacional de Agricultura (National Farmer`s Association) and several other production and academic organizations. He has been a Vice-President of FORAGRO as a representative of the Private Sector since its creation.
He has been awarded several prizes and recognitions. From IICA, in 2007 as the person that has most influenced the development of Agribusiness in the Latin American region. In Chile, in 2009 he received a special prize for his activities in the private sector by the Chilean College of Agronomists. In Brazil, in 1998 he was awarded a special prize granted by the University of Sao Paulo for his contribution to the development of Agribusiness, being the first time given to a foreigner, university professor and entrepreneur.
Dr. Barriga was elected as Vice-Chair of GFAR in the Steering Committee held in Brussels in October 28, 2010.
